Suicide is a matter of belief and jurisprudence. It is a subject of belief because it is related to the events that will happen to a person in life after death. It is jurisprudential because it is a clearly forbidden act.

From the point of view of jurisprudence, the opinion of all authorities and jurists is that it is Harām and forbidden by Sharia Law.

From the point of view of belief, we must know that the human body is a trust in this world. It is proved by reason that the human body is not his own. In general, we should know that what a man has, his property is not real, but credit, and the real owner of everything is God. This body is also in the service of man for some time, so that through it he encounters problems and solves them and reaches growth and perfection. This body has a right on us as well as everything around us such as parents, mothers, brothers, sisters, children, spouses. Even inanimate objects and animals have rights over humans, and humans should not harm them, let alone our bodies, which are one of the most important gifts of God to us. Our body is the same, and we have no right to harm it or intentionally deprive it of the right to life until God decrees it. The person who does this ugly and vile act has definitely done a great injustice to himself and to those around him and should be punished, but since he has passed away, it is not possible to punish him in this world. Therefore, God’s wisdom and His justice require him to deal with this wrong thing, and since this deal is not possible in this world, it must be in the world of Purgatory or Resurrection.
But how serious is the crime, we must say that this crime is very serious because the right to self is one of the greatest rights and it is greater than the rights of objects, animals and even some other human beings. Just as killing someone else on purpose is subject to the most severe punishments in the world, killing oneself will also be subject to the most severe punishments in the eyes of God.

The last point is that most of those who commit suicide think that by doing this, they will be relieved from the world and its difficulties, but they do not know that they have been relieved from the world, but they will be caught in a severe and prolonged hardship in the world of purgatory (Barzakh and Qiyamah). Someone who does not have religious beliefs may say what is your reason for saying this. In response, we say that at least for this act to be Haram and ugly, we have many reasons in the Sharia of Islam and other religions that a person who commits suicide will be punished by God. Of course, this punishment is a direct result of human action, not because God is cruel. Rather, just as if a person puts his hand on fire, his hand will burn, and this has nothing to do with God’s justice and injustice, because God has placed burning in the fire and told man that, O man, be careful because this fire burns and If you are not careful, you will get hurt. Even irreligious people consider suicide ugly.

Now our question to the person who wants to commit suicide is that we have many reasons in the field of being ugly and punishing suicide after death, although not 100% certain. But, do you have even a weak reason in being peaceful after suicide? How is it that you want to do something very risky but you do not have the slightest reason for it? Don’t you think that according to many intellectual and religious propositions, suicide is not the end of hardships but the beginning of misery?

Finally, in suicide, the following points should be taken into account:


    • The truth and reality of man is other than his body


    • Man does not own his body, so he cannot do whatever he wants with it


    • The human body has the most important rights


    • One of the greatest injustices is injustice to humans, whether it is to oneself or to others


    • There are rational and narrative reasons for the obscenity of suicide in Islam


    • Non-Muslims and even non-believers consider suicide as an abomination


    • According to God’s justice, every evil deed must be repaid and the perpetrator must be punished. Of course, this is the natural effect of every sin, not that God is cruel.


    • The penalty for harming and destroying the right of self to live in the world is naturally heavy


    • A person who kills another will pay for it in this world with retribution, and in this way, he may enter purgatory. But the person who commits suicide, because he cannot pay in this world, he must pay in Purgatory and Resurrection. According to the religious and philosophical foundations, it is much more difficult to give compensation in the world of Purgatory and Resurrection than in the world of this world.


    • A person who wants to commit suicide has no reason to ease himself, while there are many reasons for the ugly and harsh punishment of suicide in the world after death. Therefore, it can be safely said that suicide is not the first of convenience, but the first of misery and difficulty.


    • Someone may say that the many hardships and my spiritual problems made me do this and it is hard for me to bear them. In response, it should be said that the world is full of hardships, and whoever you look at in the world is caught in hardships and misfortunes, and the philosophy of these misfortunes is to build the human soul. Man should not run away from these misfortunes. If someone were allowed to commit suicide due to many hardships in the world, first of all, there would be no human left on earth, and secondly, many people have greater hardships than us, but they never face them passively and out of weakness, but instead seek to solve problems not running away from them.


    • Someone may say that God is kind and forgives the suicider. In response, we must say that God’s kindness and mercy are meaningful beside justice. If God pledges to punish the sinner, he must act on it. If not, God’s honesty will be questioned and he will violate his promise, and this is incompatible with wisdom. Secondly, is it justice to say that God will deal with everyone in the same way, or will he be kind to everyone, while one person commits a sin and the other does not? Shouldn’t there be a difference between these? Is a person who has done a good deed and did not commit suicide in the difficulties of life equal to someone who commits suicide? Won’t the person who waited in the storm of problems and sufferings and sought to solve the problem and did not commit suicide accuse God of injustice if He considers the person who commits suicide to be the same as the person who does not? Of course, as it is exceptional in every generality, it is possible for God to forgive people’s sins for any reason and extend His mercy to the individuals, but this is a secondary and non-main reason and is the responsibility of God himself. What we have according to rational and narrative reasons is that this act is abominable and ugly in the eyes of God and deserves punishment and a heavy fine. Therefore, a person should not take such a big risk of risky behavior just because of a possibility that God will forgive him. It is like someone saying, I am going to throw myself into a deep well and I hope, God willing, nothing will happen to me. Is this logical and does a healthy human mind accept it?
